Artist Statement

I am Sariyyah Hurt, a 16-year-old sophomore and cinematography student at Arts High School, where I explore how emotions translate into visuals and how dreams become scenes. My storytelling spans multiple genres, from drama to surrealism and beyond, reflecting my curiosity and desire to expand the horizons of filmmaking. I aim to capture the richness of experience and the magic in the everyday, showing that stories don’t have to fit into a single box—they can be as diverse and vibrant as life itself.

Growing up Black, sensitive, and creative in a world that doesn’t always feel soft has shaped my perspective, fueling a commitment to tell authentic, emotionally resonant stories.

My journey has been strengthened by hands-on experience and recognition, including awards at my school’s film festival, which validated the hours I’ve dedicated to mastering storytelling techniques and the technical craft of filmmaking. Programs like Record High, where I worked under the mentorship of Mark Collins at the Prudential Center, expanded my understanding of professional collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving in film. Years of experience on various sets, including my father’s projects, have further honed my technical skills and taught me the power of working with a team to bring a vision to life.

I am passionate about every aspect of storytelling, from concept to camera, and I strive to push creative boundaries in each project. Whether developing ideas for films and television shows, capturing a scene through cinematography, or exploring new genres, I aim to create work that connects deeply with audiences.

Looking ahead, I am excited to pursue Film Studies at the University of Southern California, where I can dive into courses in cinematography, screenwriting, and directing while collaborating with diverse and talented peers. My ultimate goal is to become a director and establish my own film studio—a space for innovation, collaboration, and storytelling that champions voices and stories that deserve to be seen, felt, and celebrated.
